I have a question...

Levi is working out 3 to 4 times a week lifting weights. They do different exercises to specifically target different muscle groups each time. Levi is 5'10" and weighs about 140 - 145 pounds. His metabolism is off the chart. He just cannot gain weight.

He is wondering just how many calories he needs to be eating and how much protein to be able to gain muscle??

The guy he works out with told him some insane amount of protein which Levi could never do. He has always had a small appetite.

Most (natural) lifters recommend protein intake of around 1.25-1.5 times body weight to gain. So that's 180-220 grams of protein (720-880 calories from protein alone). Many people do it by taking whey shakes.

There are a number of ways to see how many calories you should eat; caloriesperhour.com can help you figure out Levi's metabolic rate and how many calories he should eat to stay at the status quo with his level of activity. He will need 10-20% more than that to gain muscle.

BTW - email is kristen (underscore) rain (at) yahoo (dot) com.

Erin's doctor recommended protein shakes when she needed to gain weight and it worked fast!

Thank you, ladies. I will pass this on to Levi.
He's been eating protein bars, sounds like the shakes are something he needs to add to his diet.

Have you tried any that you actually like the taste of?

I haven't, but I've heard Myoplex is good. You can add fruit or peanut butter or even a drop of peppermint or other flavoring to improve flavor if you want.
