Electric bills @#$%#%^

We have two electric bills, actually three but one is Levi's to pay, every month. One for the house and one for the shop/studio. The one for the house was $70.00 this month. The one for the shop was $389.00 . It has gone up over a hundred dollars last month and the month before - two months ago it was
172., then 274., and now $389.00???

We called the electric company and they gave us some run around and peak days and usage charges.. which come to find out was 90.00 this month- $90.00 extra dollars for electricity that we didn't use.

We don't who to complain to.

Our only solution was to try to be more efficient. The shop is not even heated. Mark uses spot heaters(propane) to be able to work out there. We had a small electric heater in the office which we replaced with a small gas heater. Other than that we are kind of at a loss as to what we can do.

What was your bill like this month? and what are you doing to try to keep it down?

Ours has been really high too and I've been making sure lights are turned off and I only run the washer, dryer, and dishwasher when necessary. I'm not sure how it can keep getting higher when we are using less. It's crazy!

me too, I try to only run large loads in the washer so I don't have to use it so often; I hang the clothes out on nice days -admittedly that hasn't been too much this winter; yell at everyone to turn things off they aren't using. We even unplug applicances that aren't in use. Seems to make little difference.

Much higher than normal, which is a bummer. But we did have several days of snow and 20 degree temps...which we never get. We called the company; found out it would have been much, much higher had we not had a heat pump, but once it's get below freezing, it's just a killer.

You can surf the net for some tips, but it sounds like you are doing a lot already.

Ours was 286.00 this month. We hav electric heat and we had some really cold days. We keep the heat turned down and in the bedrooms it is mostly off. We like sleeping cooler and the other housewe were in was very cold even with the heat trying to warm it. We got used to dressing warmer. This house is much warmer. We also have the wood stove.

We keep the house cold and wear lots of clothes.

Who is your electricity provider? We can go on their website and find out EXACTLY when their peak days and hours are in their tariff and then you can plan accordingly.

Also, we could look for an opportunity to put a small solar array or backyard wind generator on your property. If your electric company has decent payback, you could have no bill, or make money.

Mine does not, you just net bill to zero, then your extra power becomes your gift to the PUD.

Cara - we have talked wind and solar for the house and plan on if we ever get to build again being completely off the grid but I don't think it would work for the shop (I'll have to look into that) because it requires three phrase electricity for the big machinery.

But, Thank you for the suggestion on looking up PEC's peak times. I had never even thought about being able to check that online. You're so smart !!
