I worked out for the first time last night on our new bench. I like the leg work out but I was not at all comfortable doing presses on it. I don't know if it is the bench or me.
It came with one of those curvey bars and I really don't like it. I'm going to have to buy us a straight bar. I started out really light. I did probably 50 leg lifts with 20 pounds, 10 bench presses with 35 pounds and then 2 x 10 with 20 pounds and 3 x 10 preacher curls with 20 pounds. It felt good to be lifting again. I haven't done it in a while.
I've been having some health issues. My last period lasted 12 days with lots of cramping so I haven't been doing much exercising.
I'm hoping to work up to more weight pretty quickly as I get comfortable on the bench.

Great job! You'll increase your weight fast. I'm already bench pressing 65. I think I could do more, but I don't have a spotter and dont' want to put myself in a dangerous position.
I don't work out has hard as you think. LOL I just increased my calories by 800 calories per day over the last 6 or so weeks. Surpisingly, I only gained 3 lbs in that time.

Hey A, are you doing leg lifts or leg extensions? (I've heard the extensions can be kind of rough of your knees so be careful!) Definitely get yourself a straight bar! I saw an ad at Big5 today for a bar, 100 lbs worth of weights and a bench for $75! I was blown away!

PS I'm sorry about the period stuff. Any idea what's up?

I don't guess I know the difference, Kristen, between lifts and extensions?
There is an apparatus on the front of the bench that you put weights on and hook your feet under and lift.... my knees are pretty weak and creaky anyway but it didn't seem to put much pressure on them but then I wasn't using much weight either.

And, no, I don't know what's up with my periods. I am pretty sure it is hormonal/menapausal but I promised Mark that if it doesn't straighten out pretty soon I will go the doctor (and you all know how I feel about doctors...)

Your period symptoms sound very similar to my friends who is going through menopause. Going to the doctor still sounds like a good idea especially if it's worrying you.

From your description, it sounds like you are doing leg extensions.

Yea, I went and looked at a couple of websites and that's what it is.. extensions. I will be careful because I sure don't want to damage my knees any worse but doing light weights should be good for them, right????

I think it should strengthen your quads, which should help your knees in the long run. I think.

I think as long as you don't lock your knees when you get to the top of the motion your knees should be okay. I've been doing them for two years and haven't had any problems. That isn't to say there might be long term damage ..of course I won't know that until it's too late.

This website can explain it (with pictures) better than I can: http://www.exrx.net/ExInfo/Weaknesses.html (last one: vastus medialis weakness). You should be fine as long as you're not going crazy with the weights. :)
