Supplements

Do you ladies take any specific supplements?

I take a multivitamin daily, but am considering adding flax seed oil or fish oil supplements; I've heard they're both really good for your heart specifically, among other benefits. I don't eat much fish or get too much fat or Omega-3s.

Aola, I noticed you added flax seed to your smoothie...

DIET: On and awesome. Will be "cheating" a little tonight; going out to coffee with two girlfriends. I'll probably get something non-fat and sugar-free, but hopefully I can avoid the amazing peanut butter cookies at this shop.
WATER: Just finishing my 14th cup.
WEIGHTS: None today. Heavy day tomorrow.
CARDIO: HIIT on stationary bike.

Oh boy, supplements - my favorite subject.

This is what I take daily:

400IU Vit. E
1000mg Ester C
300 mg Calcium w/magnesium & Vit D
480 mg Colostrum
200 mg Bromelain w/Quercetin

That's just 1 pill each.

The Colostrum is an immune booster which also really helps with the symptoms of IBS.
The Bromelain reduces swelling which helps with multiple symptoms including arthritis. The bromelain mixed with quercetin helps with my sinuses.

Before bed each night I take an ounce of a liquid whole food multiple vitamin with trace minerals with a tsp. of Colodial silver mixed in.

My daily smoothie includes 2T of soy protein powder and 1T flax seed. I also take Flax oil when I remember to do it.

I also add different supplements at different times to combat specific symptoms.

At the begining of March I am going to start on a 30 day regime of taking no flush niacin every day. It's not something you want to take all the time but it really brings down the cholestrol count.

That's all - really :)

Oh, yeah, one more thing... take flax instead of fish oil. The fish oil has very little shelf life.

I am currently taking echinasea with vitamin c, lycine (for that pesky herpes outbreak I had back in november), chromium to build lean muscle, 5htp when I remember, and a multivitamin. I used to use flax seed oil in my salads and loved it, but haven't gotten back in the habit. Aola is really the supplement specialist.

Wow, thanks, Aola! I'll try the flax seed. Can I get the pills or should I get the oil and drizzle it on my salad/put in my shakes/etc.?

Sandra, I haven't heard of chromium; tell me more if you get a chance...or I'll google it. :)

kristen, I take the flax oil. It's not too bad if you follow it with a big drink of orange juice. I have taken the pills too but I get tired of swallowing pills.

I started taking it for my heart years ago but almost immmediately saw an improvement in my skin.

Be sure to keep it refrigerated.

Kristen,
According to my "Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine" Chromium increases the sensitivity of cells to insulin. The book says there is no RDA for chromium but it appears that we need at least 200 mcg per day in our diet. It lists several studies that show chromium supplementation as promoting weight loss and increasing lean body mass.
I currently take 200 micrograms of Chromium Picolinate a day but am going to increase it to 400.
